HHS Freezes
Subject: Impact of HHS Freezes on Communication and Travel
Jan. 24, 2025
Dear Northwestern research community,
As the new administration in Washington, D.C., begins its work, we are closely monitoring developments that could impact federal research funding.
As you may have seen, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently issued a freeze on public communications, grant announcements, and Federal Advisory Committees, including NIH study sections. We understand that this news may be concerning, especially for those who have NIH grants under review. Previous administrations have issued similar, though less comprehensive, directives at the beginning of a new president’s term. These have remained in place until new staff assume their positions. Based on information we have received from the Association of American Medical Colleges and other sources, we anticipate that the current pause will also be temporary.
During this transition, staying informed, proactive, and prepared is crucial. We encourage you to continue advancing your work and submitting your proposals to the NIH and other federal agencies unless directed otherwise. Our offices are here to support your efforts and ensure timely submissions.
If you have any questions or need additional assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out to:
- Renee Gonzales, Chief Research Operations Officer (renee.gonzales@northwestern.edu)
- Cathy Barrera, Assistant Vice President for Sponsored Research (c-barrera@northwestern.edu)
Northwestern remains steadfast in supporting your research during this transition period, and we will continue to carefully monitor the situation and share updates as new information becomes available.
Sincerely,
Eric Perreault
Vice President for Research
